Eliminating Head Lice
When it comes right down to
it, eliminating head lice is definitely not an easy task and
in this article we will explore some of the treatments
available for head lice and what exactly you can do to
prevent your children from getting it.
One of the very first things that you need to do when you
have figured out that your child has head lice is to either
take them do the doctor to get a prescription or you can
purchase an over-the-counter treatment. Both treatments will
work, it just depends on if you want to wait for the
doctor’s appointment to arrive. If not, an over-the-counter
treatment will kill all the nits (head lice eggs) and adult
head lice.
Once you have the treatment in hand, you want to be sure
that you remove all of the clothing from the infected
person. Head lice can fall onto clothing and crawl their way
back up into the scalp, so you want to be sure that those
clothes are laundered right after they are taken off. Your
next step is to apply the head lice killing treatment –
remember, do not use any crème rinse or combination
shampoo/conditioner before using the treatment; otherwise it
messes with the treatment.
Once the medicine is applied you may have to leave it on for
several minutes to hours and then rinse it out – after it is
rinsed out, do not wash the infected hair for at least a
day. After that day has passed, feel free to wash the hair
but keep a close eye on the scalp to ensure that there are
no new head lice forming. You may have to remove the nits
with a nit comb.
Once the treatment is done and you have been keeping your
eye on the scalp, if you see any new head lice forming and
nits are still present you may need to retreat the hair. If
you see new nits within seven to ten days, a retreatment is
needed, anything after that you may want to consult your
doctor just to ensure that everything is okay.
Finally, to prevent your children from getting head lice you
just need to monitor their activity and keep in constant
contact with their friend’s parents – this way you have all
the bases covered and if one of their friends get head lice,
you can keep your kid away for a few weeks.
That is all folks, treating head lice is not difficult but
rather an annoying task – the only difficult part is
choosing over-the-counter or prescription!
