As just about all parents find out at some point in their child's life, head lice are a common pest that affect almost all children at some point. Whether they become infected after sharing a hat or a hug at school, switching off batting helmets at practice, or playing with a friend that doesn't know she has lice, they are very common and easy to get.
Finding the best head lice treatment is one of the first things any parent will do when they discover their child has head lice. Over-the-counter lice shampoo is one of the most common of these treatments and can be purchased at any local pharmacy or retail store.

It is a common misconception that pubic lice and head lice are the same type of parasite. They are not. You do not need to believe that head lice have traveled to other places on the body and you do not need to use head lice treatment everywhere. If your child is afflicted with head lice, only concern yourself with applying the head lice shampoo to the head.

You can find many a head lice treatment online that people prefer using over commercial lice shampoo, because the treatments are both safer than chemical preparations and much cheaper. One of these popular remedies calls for thoroughly dousing your hair with baby oil or vegetable oil and leaving it on overnight. Supporters of this method claim it smothers the lice and rids you of the problem.

It is important to be aware that no matter which head lice treatment you use, bedding as well as furniture must also be cleaned to rid them of lice. Lice can survive in a couch or on pillows for up to three weeks without needing to be on a human. Children's stuffed animals or coats and hats also are havens for lice and they too must be cleaned to ensure that your home is free from lice.

Lastly, remember that everyone gets head lice. It does not mean your family isn't clean or that they have unhealthy habits. Lice are easily spread and need to be eradicated completely. Otherwise, they will return and you will have to start your battle all over again.
