Symptoms of Head Lice
How can you know for sure
that your child has head lice – well, in this article we
will explore some of the signs and symptoms of this annoying
parasite along with some treatments you can use!
One of the very first symptoms of head lice is the
constantly scratching your child will be doing. You see, a
head louse feeds on blood from the human scalp and every
time the louse bites into your child’s scalp, he/she will
get an itching sensation. These itching sensations will
usually increase around the back of the ears and also the
nape of the neck as this is where most of the infestation
usually occurs.
Another sign of head lice besides the increased itching is
little white ‘flakes’ almost should appear around the roots,
back of the ears and nape of the neck. Head lice is white
and/or flesh colored, so while they may be hard to spot, you
should still be able to notice them. A lot of the time, head
lice is misdiagnosed and passed off as dandruff, but head
lice is completely different than dandruff.
Nits, which are head lice eggs, are usually the first to
appear on an infested head. If you happen to see small
white, tan or black dots along the roots of your child’s
hair and they will not shake off, they are probably nits.
Whenever you spots nits, the next thing you should be
searching for is live head lice. It usually takes about a
week for nits to turn into nymphs and another week before
nymphs turn into an adult head louse. To prevent this from
happening, a treatment should be applied as soon as you see
any nits.
Head lice treatments are the strongest they have ever been
and even the over-the-counter treatments work great and you
do not need a doctor’s visit to purchase them. However, if
your child has a very deep infestation and has head lice all
over their head, a doctor’s visit would probably be the best
bet, just so you can ensure that you are getting the best
possible treatment.
Head lice, while an annoying thing to have are very
treatable and if your child comes home with them it should
not be a huge deal, just watch out for some of the signs
outlined in this article and remember that, there are many
different treatments out there.
