Things to know about Head Lice
There are a few things that
every parent should know about head lice that most parents
do not know – in this article we will explore some facts
about head lice that you may not know and what you can do to
keep this pesky and annoying parasite out of your children’s
head.
As you may know, a head louse is a tiny parasite that
attaches onto human hair and feeds off of blood from the
scalp several times a day. What you may not know, especially
if you have never been infested with head lice is that it
hurts and can be quite the annoying thing to have. Head
lice, when they bite they cause an itching sensation which
triggers us to have an itch – when this happens not only
several days a day but also all over a child’s head, this
can be particularly annoying.
Some children even go as far as to cause bumps and open
sores along their scalp just because the itching sensation
increases. As you can see – the first sign that you child
might have head lice when you see them scratching their
scalp continuously. This is most likely when you want to
check their head for nits (lice eggs) and actual live head
lice.
Head lice are usually white or clear, so they are very hard
to see, but they are visible to the naked eye. Nits are
small white, tan or black dots that do not move when they
are shaken – if you see these clinging to your child’s hair
or at the base of the scalp, a nit comb may be in order.
This is a great way to remove all the eggs before placing a
treatment on them and it will eliminate some of the
discomfort for your child.
Onto the prevention stage of the article, there are many
things you can do to keep this parasite out of your house
and away from your child. The first is to make sure that
your child understands that sharing hair brushes, combs,
hats, clothing and scarves can spread the infestation – so
even though you may want your child to share, these personal
hygiene items are not to be shared.
These are just a few of the steps that you can do to prevent
your child from contracting head lice – making sure they are
educated about sharing and monitoring their activities is
the best way to see nits and head lice out of your home.
