Pediculosis - What Is It?
Hi there,
Basically Pediculosis
is an infestation of lice on the body. Pediculosis as a
condition, refers to three different types of lice. These
lice live on the head, body and pubic hair, but each type
can only live on one area of the body.
The most common cause of
pediculosis is head lice. Head lice, is a condition often
seen in school age children who have close contact with
other children. Lice are very contagious, and can easily be
transmitted from one person to another by having close
contact with someone who has an infestation of head lice.
Contrary to what some
people believe, anyone can catch head lice. Pediculosis does
not distinguish between people on different levels of the
social/economical ladder. Having head lice does not mean
that a person has poor hygiene, or lives in a dirty
environment. In fact, lice actually prefer to take up
residence on clean, healthy heads because their eggs will
stick to the hair shaft better.
Head lice are very small,
making it extremely hard to detect them unless you are
specifically looking for them, or their eggs, more commonly
known as nits. To help contain an outbreak of lice it is
important to examine your child’s head on a regular basis to
ensure that they are showing no signs of infestation. You
will far more likely detect the nits before you see live
head lice. If you are seeing adult head lice it is likely
that the infestation is in advanced stages. You don’t want
it to get that far because it will be very hard to contain,
and eliminate it from your family.
There are many treatments for pediculosis; these include
shampoos and creams that contain chemicals that kill the
lice, but require a second treatment within 10 days of the
first treatment.
Recent studies have found
that these chemical treatments for Pediculosis are no longer
completely effective in eliminating lice. This is not good
news as it prompts parents into applying many treatments to
their child’s head, which can result in a dangerous level of
toxins building up in the blood. As a result, this could
lead to damage to your child, as the long-term affects have
not been thoroughly examined.
If your family encounters a pediculosis condition you may
want to try one of the many non-toxic treatment alternatives
that are available. Some are home remedies while others are
products that do not contain chemicals.
No matter which form of treatment you choose to use for
pediculosis, to completely eliminate the head lice problem
you will have to be persistent and vigilant.
